The Role of Hormones and Infertility

Hormones play a critical role in fertility. However, hormones can become imbalanced due to a variety of reasons, making it difficult to become pregnant. Some people might think IVF is the solution, but the hormone imbalance needs to be corrected before the body is ready to conceive and carry a pregnancy to full term.

There are several hormones that are involved in the reproductive process, these include the Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone (LH), and the estradiol and progesterone hormones, as well as others.

FSH hormones stimulate the growth of ovarian follicles, LH hormones trigger ovulation and release of a mature egg from the ovary, and estradiol and progesterone hormones regulate the menstrual cycle.

Other hormones that play a role in fertility include thyroid hormones, prolactin (produced by the pituitary gland), stress hormones, and testosterone. Insulin resistance and imbalances in glucose levels can also lead to hormonal dysfunction.

If any of these hormones are too high or too low, it can cause dysfunction within the reproductive system (as all as affecting ovarian function) and therefore, make it very difficult to become pregnant.

At Road to Fertility, our goal is to find and address the root cause of what’s causing your hormonal imbalance and create a customized fertility treatment plan based on your body’s specific needs.
